A loss after opponent disconnects

I just hopped into a ranked game and ended up the away team.
I lead off with a line drive base hit that his left fielder completely missed. It then said lost connection to opponent, or whatever the message is.
I assumed he raged and turned his PS4 off after his LFer missed the ball, but when I get back to the menus I get the loss and lose rating.

What causes this to happen, and is there a way to fix it?
