After spending a fair bit of time with this "for science" and seeing the season changeover....wow is this bad.

And the funny thing? The season thing is actually more of a positive than a negative. other than giving out an exclusive card, the battle pass is absolutely harmless. Faster xp, a headstart on the track, some bonus packs...but xp without it is reasonable enough that the battlepass isnt required at all. There are new free cards to earn (last seasons end reward was a good David Robinson card, and this ones Wade looks good enough too) and I do think in general seasons(innings?) is a good concept, its sets that are the problem.

As a casual player, the domination mode is fine and I wouldn't mind seeing something like it the Show. The other offline mode is absolute trash. Not only are good rewards extremely rare, if they do show up you have to face a juiced team to play them on a higher difficulty level than you selected. I would say it would be the equivalent of making the playoffs of a mini season you intended to play on rookie be more like a Hall of Fame game. Doable but far too sweaty for the amount of time needed to get to the playoffs.

There is one strong online mode, salary cap, that would be great in the show. They also have a terribly designed 3 on 3 mode which is fun enough to play (gameplay issues aside, I preferred the early NBA live days to this), but to queue up for a game you have to watch the game before you finish and its tedious. Its supposed to simulate the 'we got next' streetball thing but why would anyone think this is a good idea to actually put in game?

But wow...the packs. Right now the best cards in the game have a <1% rate on even the most expensive packs. The cards that are a step below on most packs also have a less than 1% rate, and maybe can get a little higher on expensive packs. The tier below that is like 2% or something. And on top of that, these packs tends to have s4+ of these < 1% cards. The end result is if you open a special pack you are getting a live series caliber of a card, and if you are using ingame currency it might not even be a card exclusive to that pack. And if you want a specific card expect to spend a LOT of money for it. This is absolutely gacha quality scummery, and unlike gacha games you know the game will have a 12 month support cycle tops

They also like to throw these cards that are essentially The Show equivalent of 'gold or better'. For as much as we give Ballin packs [censored], there absolutely is an inflated diamond rate and you do pull them...but not so with 2K...whatever that low tier is you are almost definitely getting it, even if you spent money for it.

It is just so much worse of a system than I expected. They had a period before the last season where they give a free pack from a past program every 6 hours and I stopped caring because there was 0 excitement to opening a pack to see what useless trash I was getting

And then there is the winter event which did have some free cards that were good but the main prize was a Shaq card that was not possible to earn without spending hundreds of dollars, if not more.

I'll also say the huge player pool is great. And blocking shots with Mutombo and having him do the finger wave never gets old, even if most would consider Mutombo useless because he cant hit 3s

I stopped playing that game after realizing that you need to actually spend money in it, I bought $50 worth of VC and it got me no where so I uninstalled it, I would rather play mlb the show and Mario Kart

Yeah, I'm sure nms is viable on most levels of play, but its not like the show in ease of acquiring new cards. And it provides you even less value for dollar than the Show does

And on top of this I just found out the new seasons top free card has a hidden upgrade if you buy the paid battle pass: you get a version of the card with identical stats but a better jump shot animation. Essentially the equivalent of being able to pay 10 bucks to give Mike Schmidt a better swing (DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT SDS). Prior seasons the upgrade was purely card cosmetics.
