Question for the Rule Gurus
-
So, I know if you get a base hit and the throw goes to third or home and you then take second base you're only credited with a single. But in the event that a runner gets gunned down at home on a clear double, should you still only be credited with the single? I was doing one of the XBH moments with Yaz? Hit a clear double down the line...I was literally standing on second base as the cutoff man is accepting the throw in from the outfield...Adley gets thrown out at home to end the innings. I'm sitting there thinking, they're not gonna credit me with a double and sure enough they didn't. Is this correct...or just one of the wonky things SDS screws up?

I believe it is up to the official score keeper. But a general rule would be would it have been a double if there were no base runners. In your scenario it seems the scorer decided that the outfielder would have had you at second.

So Adley tried to score from first?

MLB Rule 9.06 (page 113) states how to determine the value of base hits.

I would assume Adley was on second in this scenario.

It certainly seems like you should get the double, and a live scorer would probably give it to you. But 9.06b states that if the official scorer thinks that you advanced beyond first solely due to the fielder's choice, you only get a single. Scorers sole discretion. And you can't even send a nasty note up to the pressbox. Sorry about that.

Yeah, it’s been like this all year, unfortunately. Even if you’re standing on second when the throw comes from the outfield, if a runner gets thrown out at home the game only gives you a single. Aggravating af in the extra base hit moments.
