I wanted to start a whole new PSN account with my email instead of my wife’s but I’m pretty sure I’ll have to start from scratch to do that. Meaning, I’d lose everything I have under my current PSN account if I make a new one on the PS5.

You’re able to change the email address associated with your account, assumedly. As it’s not the key field. A company like Sony would not make such a huge mistake (other companies have/do!). What if somebody has to cancel their email account etc.

Not related to your issue, but this is probably why changing usernames was such a big hurdle - the username field had most likely been the unique key that each user account is built around. It’s why a new username would work in only games where the dev accounts for it, because it reads from a different field (with the new key field being a numeric ID).
