I’ve been very against this change since it was announced. I get not everyone plays the way I do or enjoys DD for the same reasons I do, but I really don’t understand why this change was made.
My biggest gripe:
This ruins Theme Teams. Which is ironic in a year where they introduce Captains to try to help TTs. You’re forced to leave key players out of your lineup or use an inferior version of that player because they are in an unusable set. There will be no way to make the best possible TT come July. I know I’m in the minority here but I use a TT all year in Ranked and this is a massive blow to the way I enjoy the game. There already isn’t enough Wildcards to make this work for me.This also ruins the progression stage of DD. People already have 90+ overall teams. This is week 1 of this mode. What will there be to play for come July? You’ll already have multiple 99 overall options at every position. Pitching is really the only thing I see getting significant upgrades from what we have now. I know a lot of people love the early stages where you’re trying to piece together a lineup and have multiple gold player options that are usable. Maybe this is nostalgia talking but it really shortened the lifespan of this game in my opinion. It also greatly reduces the value of live series collections and cards. I know many of you have asked for live series cards to be more useable and this basically sped up the process of making them irrelevant. Captains make up for this a bit but in a month, you’re going to have so many better options that are Flashbacks/Legends that Captains probably won’t even meet requirements to activate.
This feels like SDS just forcing us to get the shiny new toy. They want you to collect 100+ players to get the 99s and all 100+ cards plus the 99s you unlock will be unusable in July.
Id really like to hear the reason behind making this change. People stop playing in August because SDS can’t help themselves with dropping OP cards early and refuse to give us good versions of popular players until November. Not mention having glaring issues with their game and saying it’s playing as intended… So instead of adjusting to make overall progression slower and making sure to drop more usable versions of the big name players along the way before their 99s, they drop more 99s day one. And I guess their plan is to make you keep buying the shiny new cards to keep your interest rather than fixing how their content was before.

mate i respect that you are passionate about this game and your feelings on it - but for me i am thinking polar opposite to you
i hardly play this game - i will never do all of the conquests / offline CPU stuff = because to me it is horribly boring and meaningless - a waste of life if you will - i am down with playing the Negro leagues storylines, learn about the players, get me a solid 90's team in no time - play on ranked and events whenever i wish - that is it
for guys like me, who have played mind you since 2003 the show - this is far better than previous years when you had to be a nerd dork with no life grinding away until the end of year - only to .... repeat that cycle again....

Both perspectives make sense, but I am still unsure if I like the card sets format.
For example... I was going to buy the CF Jim Edmonds card, then realized, that I will not be able to use him in a few months without a wildcard designation. Therefore, I chose not to buy the packs or purchase this card from the market. I still may later, but this format makes me more reluctant to invest and go after more set 1 cards.
-
See for me I don't like using the same card for more than a couple months anyway. My lineup completely changed pretty much monthly is previous years anyway regardless of how good the cards were. I definitely see both sides of the coin here but I'm pretty much as indifferent as they come on this one. I for one do like having high 90s cards early. Besides Trout I never used live series cards anyway other than in BR. 85-89 overall cards are more often less fun to use than the golds and silvers which can just be used in Br anyway. I do wish the set 1 collection rewards were core for what is required for them but oh well

i am exactly the same - my roster changes all throughout the year as they drop new cards to mix it up
2022 i finished my RS at 34-1 - something like this - i had randy and everything but 0 desire for the bigger collections - no time for this i don't even think i got 1 inning boss last year due to lack of wanting to play so much on this game - less is more (for me)

In my case, I love the idea of competing against good teams through Ranked and if you like to grind like crazy then you will still have better cards (the great 99s). I just grind the WBC Program and have a pretty decent team.

absolutely .... i did some of the WBC - super easy stuff - also the Negro leagues is giving a great team with learning about the history - i also have almost 50K stubs doing 0 in the market flipping - just selling off everything that comes in with packs

Im not really sure how that changes with this system. The WBC is definitely a grind like POTM or other content last year. The only difference is they gave 99s day one instead of like 92s. Team Affinity seems like more of a grind than previous years as well, except now you can’t even use the cards in 2 months. How exactly does this reduce how much you have to grind when 90% of your team is going to be useless in 2 months? If anything it seems like more of a grind than ever in order to keep up.

how i interpreted this is to never really grind for any set cards - just go for the 'core' cards and have fun with that development over time - i hear you on the 'sets' stuff i have no interest in grinding for it to disappear - yes i know about the wild card slot and that is a cool feature if you love a card from a set
-
I’m thinking that it may lead to more people taking the time to parallel core cards. Those can be used the whole way through

If you only use Core players you’re going to be missing out on a TON of content. And I still haven’t really gotten an answer on why we need to restrict our roster to certain sets. If they want to drop 99s all year and make it so easy to get, why does SDS care which 99s I’m using? They are just fabricating reasons to have to reset your team.
If we had say, 3 Wildcards instead of 1, I’d have a lot less issue with this but for people who like to use certain players they like rather than just whoever is good and easy to get.. this sucks.

Ok cool. Well if you could care less and barely even play this game. Im not sure why you’re even on this forum, let alone, bashing people for having an opinion or play style that’s different from yours.

If we had say, 3 Wildcards instead of 1, I’d have a lot less issue with this but for people who like to use certain players they like rather than just whoever is good and easy to get.. this sucks.
i hear you on missing out on a lot of content - but i could care less - i never did McCutchen / Brett last year - all of that collection stuff beyond the Randy card - no thank you - there is plenty of cards already here to keep me entertained
Ok cool. Well if you could care less and barely even play this game. Im not sure why you’re even on this forum, let alone, bashing people for having an opinion or play style that’s different from yours.
you are not understanding me clearly here - i have played this game for just shy of 20 years - much longer than you i am sure - i just don't feel the need to obtain every single card and nerd out like you on the collections / wanting to do things YOUR WAY - who cares - roll with the tide or make a game that is better yourself - your entitlement thinking that "your way is the best way" is laughable at best

I think you’re underestimating the cards we will get during season 2 and season 3. I imagine there will be equally great if not better cards to supplement. Also, this really only applies to RS. There are a large percentage of players who wouldn’t touch that mode if it could save humanity.
Obviously we are all gonna feel how we feel but it’s only day 2 of regular release and people are worrying about this.
Normally we wouldn’t get cards like the Chipper, Babe, Trout 99s until October. Instead we get them till July and then can break them out again in October. I really don’t see what people are worrying about.

you are right in that it applies to RS - and you have guys like OP crying already - we all predicted this - everyone thinks they know best but are just a random opinion on the internet
