What's the difference between the defense badge in game and the one on the back of the card?

For example, Milestone Pujols has diamond defense on his card, but in the game, he has a gold badge. What attribute brings it down from diamond to gold? I have him at his primary position (1B), so it isn't a 2nd POS penalty.
