If they gave him 75 fielding he would probably be a diamond and I believe they only want a certain amount of live series diamonds at any given time.
I think he should be a diamond honestly. He ended as a diamond last year and he's been having a pretty good start as well. Not to mention the fact he's the heart and soul of the team.
He's a good player but heart and soul have no rating in mlb the show. Some would call him an arrogant a$$hole
I know it doesn't have a literal rating. But Fernando Tatis Jr. having upper 80s fielding is an example of something similar. I'm a fan of Tatis but he's been having some serious issues defensively and yet he has an elite rating because he's the cover athlete.
I haven't been watching, but isn't Tatis' problem errant throws? Not so much fielding?

He also gets the San Diego Homer rating

Its both actually, the game announcers blamed it on him still being a bit rusty after injury. But he has 11 errors, 4 fielding errors and 7 throwing errors. So yeah if I compare that with Tim Anderson's numbers I can only conclude that they do actually account for stuff other than statistics, in this case the fact that Tatis is the cover ahtlete. Or he should have 60 fielding or lower as well.

So I'm watching the Sox play the Yankees and I see Tim Anderson making a nice sliding play to take away a hit from Kyle Higashioka. Which reminded me that Tim has a 63 fielding and a 63 reaction rating in this game.
According to fangraphs, Tim is better in every defensive category than Fransisco Lindor this year and has only made 1 error so far. Lindor has an 85 fielding rating and 90 reaction.
I'm not saying Tim Anderson is a better fielder than a multiple gold glove winner in Lindor. I know TA is more valuable for his bat. But 63 fielding and 63 reaction? That's horrible. Should be around a 75 at least.
Not a good comparison. If we were just looking at Lindor this year he would be a common haha
TA has been an absolute butcher in past years, worst defensive shortstop according to metrics in the last full season in 2019 and had like 26 errors.
Much improved this year so far in a small sample.
Bogaerts is a guy that gets shafted on defense IMO.

True, 2019 was a bad season defensively for TA. 2019 was also a horrible defensive year for Tatis, and he already has 11 errors this year compared to Tim's 1 error where they both had good years in 2020. Yet Tatis has elite fielding in this game. So how does that work?

I don't claim to understand how it really works, but from the outside, I really don't get how a 3-year rolling average could be affected by any evaluated attribute change over two weeks of data dropping from the front end and two weeks of new data being added at the recent end? There's still nearly 3 years of data (plus and minus two weeks) that hasn't changed. Tennis rankings change more slowly and they drop data every week and only roll for 1 year. I guess I'm a bit shocked that they claim it's a 3 year roll but then attributes can change quite a bit.
https://mlb21.theshow.com/roster_updates/2
So Xander dropped -7 in DISC because of +/- two weeks over 3 years of data?
Tim Anderson -8 VIS for the same update?Maybe I'm misunderstanding how it works, but it seems if they use a 3 year rolling average and update every two weeks during the season, that would mean only two weeks of data is being dropped and only two weeks of data is being added to a larger chunk of data spanning 3 years. If that's the case, these attribute changes are massive.

Well yeah Tatis is probably overrated but according to Fangraphs defensive metric he was the #7 SS last year, although he had a rough rookie year. So he got helped by that, but I agree he's overrated in the field. TA has a history of bad defense to overcome and going into this year they didn't really have much of a reason to change it although maybe it is too low. They don't change defensive ratings during the year normally which is funny to me, because they should.

Yes last year he did have a good year fielding wise. But so did Tim. 2019 was a bad year in that regard, but Tatis was bad that year as well in the field so that's where the confusion kicks in. You'd assume they'd have similar attributes based on 2019 and 2020 combined and like I said earlier, Tim only has 1 error this year and Tatis has 11....

I'm agreeing with you Tatis is overrated and TA under... But just saying the way things are, TA has to overcome a history of poor defensive play so it's going to take more than one partial season, even though it should have moved somewhat for last year... They are very stingy with defensive ratings and sometimes I feel like they go on rep over on field performance.

Exactly. And I don't have an issue which Tatis being rated as he is, I'm a fan of him too. But Tim Anderson is better than an 82 overall with 63 fielding imo.
