deGrom and Burnes look like auto picks to be in the program.
They wouldn't give deGrom a card early on especially since he has a high overall live series diamond.

Xander bogarets as well has been hitting very well

I understand that. But based on merit, he absolutely deserves it. Acuna as well.

Justin turner definitely could get one of the mid tier diamonds
-
Vlad Jr, Olson, Mercedes, Burnes, 99 Buxton

They would just update the live series card when roster updates start rolling out so I'm pretty sure if deGrom keeps playing the way he is, his live series diamond will probably get upgraded.

Buxton and/or Burnes at the top

An FYI for any new players POTM a player is selected to be a POTM if they had a month that exceeded their expectations.
For example
Degrome is doing Degrome things right now so he is as expectations goes is pretty on point.
On the other hand Corbin, Olsen, JD, Vlad JR are preforming above what their expectations where or how their Live series card would presumably preform
Now I am sure their exceptions so of Dergrom started 5 games in April and had a 0 Era I'm sure they would look at that as a reason to give him a lightning card

When they "update" cards do they just add that little counter to the top corner of the card or do they actually get an upgraded card?

They update/change cards in order to match what the player is doing in real life. So for example if someone like trea turner starts making less contact on baseball but starts hitting home runs then his live series card would adjust based on the amount hrs he hit, and how far he hit them etc.
Keep in mind the player has to keep on performing at that level for around 2-4 weeks in order to be considered for an update or downgrade.
