Pin Point Pitching

Having trouble trying to figure it out.

For example, when selecting a FB, once I bring the right joystick down and then back straight up, when do I release the right joystick? Because if I leave it held up until the pitch is about to be released, the pitch seems to get thrown in the dirt or always low. But then if I don't leave it held up and release it, prior to his release, I notice there's a 'red line' that goes from top to the middle of the meter and is clearly inaccurate.

I'm so confused, is there anybody who could help out and explain in simplest terms how to use this method?
