Is mlb 20 just 18 with better content?
-
And a few other issues but I’m on the right track with this one right?
-
No
Fastballs are actually useable. Pitch speeds were awful in 18. In a related point, strikeouts are actually a thing, I could never maintain a 9 K/9 with any pitcher in 18, but I can do that easily in 20
Contacts hitters are more usable, now don't confuse that with me saying contact hitters are great, they aren't, but they are way more usable than 18.
I very much prefer 20 gameplay to 18

I do too. I mostly say this cause most runs scored are just home runs no real hit variety.

I don't think that point makes 20 pretty much 18 besides content though. Yes home runs are an issue, but it's still nowhere close to how bad 18 gameplay was.

I’ll give 18 props though, better urgency while fielding is one.

I honestly don't remember fielding in 18, so I can't comment on that.
18 was just bad, at least with 20 you get glimpses into a good game, there was no hope of that looking at 18.
Fix check swings, reduce the fluke bad pci home runs and fix pitching accuracy, and suddenly we are talking about the best MLB the Show ever.
Obviously, that's easier said than done, but I can see a great game buried somewhere under all the problems, and that's what probably makes 20 so frustrating.

You are right and I do agree with you on 18 being the worst. 20 could’ve been amazing, and what you point out is very true. I also just want some better hit variety, My home runs are double the amount of doubles I have in this game.

3 words: NOT EVEN CLOSE

No, it’s not like ‘18, it’s beset by a host of problems on the gameplay side but most are different issues than the ones that plagued ‘18. I’ve played DD since ‘16 and it’s the second worst version in my opinion. I’d rank them in this order:
-
‘17 - Some problems, Top spin, late swings, tagging animations, but skill based gameplay and engaging content aside from the online walks required to progress through Pepe.
-
‘19 - Not as skill based as ‘17, but a huge improvement from ‘18 all around and easily the best content of any DD I’ve played, which definitely counts for a lot. Contact hitters were super viable, another area that has taken a retrograde step since, as power is the only route to success in this years game.
-
‘16 - Tough introduction to MLB the Show for me, playing on an old TV and getting blown away by fastballs, but it was still engaging enough to get me hooked, to the point I still play every day.
-
‘20 - Content has been okay at times, TA3 being the clear highlight of the year for me. Other times it’s just been a bit silly and I think that statement applies to gameplay as well. When it plays well, it’s better than ‘19 and ‘16, but then you’ll run into one of those games where you just want to smash the console to fragments so you’re never tempted to play again.
It feels so scripted when you make an unforced error, followed by a hanging pitch on good input that gets smashed out, or when you can’t find the zone suddenly and the inning turns into a circus. Play enough games and witness this repeat itself and begins to feel like you’re not truly in control of anything that happens and it’s all been designed to give you the illusion of control, while playing out as it will, regardless. That’s a terrible thing in a competitive H2H game and the main reason I’ve lost faith in the product this year. -
‘18 - SDS got absolutely nothing right. Content was lacking. Gameplay was terrible. I hope I never see a worse version of DD than this.

Once again you provide a great synopsis of the games as always. My order is just a little different from yours. 16 was the best to me followed by 17. At least in 19 contact hitters were relevant again so I rank 19 3rd. I dislike how 20 plays but overall 18 was a waste of an entire year for MLB The Show but it’s all we had.

Oh come on, now. That was only for the first third of the games active lifecycle. It then recurred and will probably resurface again early next year, as is the trend. Let’s not complain about every minor little detail!
