Rights to players

Can we get a better description from the devs on how they get the rights for retired players to be in the game? I hear everybody throw around just basic “they buy the rights” but is it that costly to buy a guy like for example Arod or Jeter etc. to be in the game. I think a majority of us want to know what it entails to have the rights for retired players.

I highly doubt you'll get anyone from SDS to get into the legalese of player licensing.

You aren't going to get a detailed look at negotiations, there is a reason they are confidential, both for the players and for SDS.
The only answer you are ever going to get is they negotiate a price with players for their name, and that's how it's done. There isn't some secret they are holding back,
it's fairly simple. 1. Contact player 2. Negotiate a price. That is how rights are gotten.
And yes, it is costly to buy guys like Arod and Jeter.

Licensing of retired MLB players is incredibly complicated. The MLB Player's Alumni Association represents a very small number of retired players so this often requires you to track down each player's representative directly and negotiate a deal for each player.
Current players are a bit easier since their licensing rights are all handled via the MLBPA.
Handling crossovers when active players retire (Ichiro, Ortiz, etc) just adds more work.

Money a lot of the times isn't the factor. player input and how he is represented in the game often are sticking points. hall of fame, mlb alumni association, and there are a few groups that handle groups of retired players. other than that it individual players/ agents.

For non MLB players it’s something negotiated. They won’t tell us because if let’s say they pay Griffey $X for 3 years and Bonds gets $2X for 2 years. Griffey may not be so happy to hear that
