BR freezoff

I'm playing my 9-0 game right now, and I'm in a freezeoff that's going on 20 minutes right now.
My opponent pinch hit for a position player that already had a platoon advantage, immediately called for time at the plate, it gave the "opponent's controller disconnected" prompt, which immediately went away, and now we're frozen, tied 2-2 in the 2nd inning. So a few questions.
Are these known steps for a cheesy freeze off? If he disconnects or force closes the game will I know with a "lost connection with opponent" prompt which will send me back to the postgame screen? Can I finagle my way out of this somehow?

whoever quits or turns their system off first gets the loss. So, turn off the TV, go for a walk, take a nap, feed the dog, polish your nails, you'll get the win eventually.

But will I know if he quits first? I can't hit the pause button or anything. So how do I know if he quits? Will I get the "lost connection" on my screen?

You'll return to the post game screen when he quits.
