Big Papi

So when I reached 300 program stars I picked Larry Walker, and dont regret that decision at all. But after seeing reviews on Papi, it sounds like hes probably the overall favorite. I should preface this by saying I'm always tinkering with my team, buying and selling new cards to try new guys out. I'm a diehard Phillies fan so it absolutely pained me to do it, but I ended up selling Mike Schmidt. I just couldnt hit with him. I figured better to sell him and get value now to buy someone else who I hopefullt have success with than have him in my lineup just because hes a Phillie. I have Chipper back at 3B who has been one of my best hitters. After selling Schmidt, doing some flipping, and using the stubs I already had saved I was able to buy Big Papi for 96k stubs. The buy order just went through, and I cant wait to try him out later on!! So pumped!!

@PhillyRunt44 if your close to or in the prestige xp path save stubs and take Thames for 1B he is a god among men

I'm thinking about picking up Papi also. Currently using Thome at first with Killibrew on the bench who I'll also play over there on occasion. Like you though I've read a lot of good reviews on Ortiz so I'm thinking about selling Thome and getting him.

Having Papi in DD this year has been my favorite part of the game. I'm usually better with righties than lefties for some reason, but with Papi it's just too easy.
-
I picked up Papi to complete the 5th Inning set. Very pleased so far.

I'm at Diamond 97 right now. I plan on taking Thames, but its going to take me a while to get there lol. I figure I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Does Thames have OF secondary?

If you can afford it I'd keep Thome and have both.

Yeah I think he can play FR. I picked up Ramirez in the pack, just because of the options at 1B, which have gotten much better since then. I'm going to have to make a decision come the second pack...

I can afford it yeah and I've thought about that also. I just got Thome and Killibrew not that long ago so I haven't used them a ton but they've both been pretty solid. I'd have no problem keeping them at first but I continue to hear so many good things about Papi that I'm curious about him.

As a tribe fan I had to do Thome but I for sure would've gotten Ortiz otherwise

No dig on Walker at all, but Papi imo is the better card. His swing is just silk. Plenty of close/comparable options in the OF to choose from and that depends on what you value and what mode you play in. Glad you dove in and got him.
-
Update: 1st game in RS with him- 2/4 2HR 3 RBI. Love his swing! Money well spent I'd say!

I'm curious how his D is for those of you that have had him for a while now. His stats are pretty bad but its pretty well known that defense at first isn't the most important thing in the world.

Just finished off 5th inning set today and only played a few games with him but there is something about his catch animation that makes me hold my breath every time he gets the ball. His body language looks like hes almost suprised he caught it haha.

Haha....yikes. Not necessarily the look you want from your first baseman. "Yaay guys look what I found!" Of course if that's all it is and he can smash HR's I suppose you can live with a wonky animation.

I've been using him and surprisingly his D has been pretty solid. I turned a a double off of a grounder to 1st today that impressed me, his catch and release was surprisingly quick and he moves better than I would expect. Ultimately I plan on keeping Belli at 1st and using Papi as a bat, but I'll be starting him for prestige stats.
Oh, and Walker is that good. Speed, D, bat... I ended up picking up all 3 Bosses because they're all solid.

Yeah I would expect him to move pretty slow over there. Good to hear though that he's a little better than what you had expected. Completely agree with Walker too. I picked him up about a week ago and he's been as advertised. That's what makes me want Papi now because I've heard a lot of similar things about him too. With the exception of speed and defense of course.

How and where do you go to get Thames?

How and where do you go to get Thames?
When you finish diamond xp path you open up prestige xp path. There’s 3 choice packs in there where you can pick 99 Thames, 99 Jose rameriez, and 99 George springer. They are a grind as I think its 1 prestige level equals 4 Normal xp levels. This is also where you get the prestige versions of posey, sandburg, etc.

Cool, I'll check it out. Thank you.
