Occasional nerfed bats

What is the deal with the nerfed bats from time to time? I'm playing conquest, Yanks, Red Sox and Nats pitching no problem. I all of a sudden come up against the feared Orioles and Sandy Koufax and Mariano Rivera themselves Wade Leblanc and Hector Velasquez, 6 innings and 1 freakin hit in a loss. Looks like everyone was right about the ridiculous inconsistency of all star level. Seems to always come up when I'm at the end of an innings requirement for dailies too.
