Events matchmaking. Is nobody playing anymore ?

Is there really a big overlap between CoD players and this game?
Probably has more to do with the new ranked season than CoD, but less people are surely playing events all season because the cards cost 3-4x what they used to on the market and they are worthless for collections unlike past seasons.

Even BR now is tough to find matches

Look at the prices on the BR rewards Semien and Kershaw. That tells you all you need to know in regards to how many people are playing BR. Both of those cards are mediocre at best and selling at 900K plus due to such short supply on the market.
