Online multiplayer help: never had PS plus in the past

Looking to purchase next gen. Do you have to have PS Plus/Xbox Live or Game Pass for multiplayer?

I have been able to play previous versions on PS4 without PS Plus.

So I'm trying to figure out if XBOX or PS5 is more economic for me? I'm only going to play The Show and the new college football game when it goes down.

Yes, you have to have at least basic PlayStation Plus to play any online multiplayer games.
