Can you go more in depth on how this protecting works?

Unfortunately, you will always get that. I am just now at 200 games online and am just under .500 yet I get routinely matched against BR flawless, WS flawless and a guy last week that was 600 wins over .500. I understand that sometimes the last place team faces the best team in baseball, but it seems like I am constantly mismatched and that SDS has certain players they "protect" and consistently give them matchups against weak players like me so they will continue to stream (free advertising) and/or invest more money/time in the game. (more money in their pocket)
In the end that's why I didn't buy 22 and have no plans to buy 23. Once you purchased the game SDS doesn't care. Mission accomplished for them. Working as intended.
If you’re still on 21, the player pool you’re in is even smaller than the one currently playing 22, so naturally you’ve got a better chance of matching up with someone much higher ranked than you. But I’m curious about this “protected” class of players you’re on about. Please tell us how that works.

I just started events. I’m 3-1. I’m not very good. I keep getting matched up against guys who are like 114-10. I’m not feeling that. What can I do to get better matchups??
It’s basically what @eatyum_MLBTS said, they only go by your current run, so with a record of 3-1 you could face an opponent that is 114-10, but that is their total record for the event, not their current run which may be the same or close to yours. Plus, at this point of the year there are less players who are just casual players. I hope that helps.
Edit: I wish they had a better way to match players up in events.

OK. No problem.
I have noticed that many times I am playing a player who is already significantly better than I am, but every single break goes their way. I can have a pitch with 3/4 of the ball in the zone called a ball almost every time, but their pitch can nip the tiniest portion of the black and it's a strike almost every single time.
Countless times my pitcher with 90 plus control throws "perfect" pitches and they go MILES from where I am aiming them. Most of them aimed out of the zone and they magically go dead center of the strike zone to be crushed for no doubt homers.
So I then started to test this as the games were already over for me and I threw pitches into the dirt and every one of them golfed over 450 feet for homers.
I then started throwing fastballs at the center of the strike zone and every one of them was way out of the strike zone. Multiple times when they try to steal and the throw beats the runner by a considerable amount and the tag comes down only to have them called safe.
One game runners on second and third and the runner on second tries to take third thinking my throw would go home and he was out by at least 10 feet and was somehow called safe.
In my opinion that is the AI determining the results instead of the players, and if the player they want to win the game is somehow not doing as well as they want, the AI will blatantly cheat on behalf of the player they want to win.
Why else would
EA SportsSDS be more worried about "online play stats" vs. Actual online experience for the players? Working as intended. -

Nobody streaming is playing on MLB the Show 21 you’re not sane if you think SDS cares at all about what happens on last years game in November of the current games cycle. You’re basically playing on a game that has been dead for an entire year while the current game everyone else is on is bleeding out its last signs of life.

So as long as it's not in the current game than too bad, so sad? Sorry, but SDS never fixes anything going forward, so I can guarantee it still happens in the 22 version and will definitely happen in 23.

Yes, I understand that, but if you think SDS fixes anything then why are there still major bugs like the bunt glitch and others that have been going on since before I was playing?
Their business plan is if it didn't cause a bunch of players to stop buying the game or microtransactions during the year then it isn't important enough to fix now. So, any and all bugs in the current game go forward into the new game, which is basically slapping a fresh coat of paint on the game and a roster update.
You can put all the shine in the world on a steamer, but it's still a steamer. All SDS wants to do is vacuum as much money as possible from their players via the microtransaction. Player satisfaction is very low on their list of things to care about.
I know my not purchasing the game is not even a blip on their radar, and they could care less about me, but I know when I am being cheated. I already get enough of the "get good", which is a lot harder when I not only have to beat my opponent but hit the "lucky board" against the AI too.

Video games are made with programming so you are correct to some extent. Your point about the game being designed to make it so only a select few are able to be successful seems unreasonable to me. I think it’s far more likely we all play the same game and are subject to the same shortcomings in the programming or gameplay. The bunting glitch you speak of is easily defended by bringing the second baseman in halfway on the defensive positioning screen. Good PCI placement is generally better than bad PCI placement and you know it, arguing that PCI input doesn’t matter just comes off as you crying about losing a game. I’m going to venture a guess that you have won games off a bad timing homerun and I’m going to also guess you didn’t complain about it or attribute it to the game being broken. In conclusion even if the game is broken in some way we all play and compete on the same exact game so I don’t see the competitive conspiracy you see.

I think it is reward tier based. As in, the closer you get to the next reward, the harder the opponents you are going face. Eatyum's point makes more sense, though I have lost countless games in a row and still get matched up with the higher ranked players. I have been at 13 wins for probably the past 6 or so games and these guys crush everything no matter where you throw it, and they are toxic to boot with their pausing and bunt dancing and constant replay of their wall scraper home runs. You just have to be patient and if somone is too toxic...just quit. The games don't count.
