CPU pickoffs
-
I’m not one to typically complain about gameplay issues, mostly because a lot of others make 10,000 threads on the same issues, and the ones that aren’t redundantly covered, seem to fall on deaf ears.
But with that said, CPU pickoffs are absolutely unrealistic and ruin game play. There’s no reason under the sun for the CPU to throw over 6 straight times on a guy with 50 speed. None whatsoever. And the amount of times guys get picked off base with or without one extra step is ridiculous too. Especially guys with good speed and excellent baserunning. Particularly off of second base. The dive back is horrendous and essentially a bellyflop.
As if CPU OF throwing and the INF diving hasn’t been ridiculous enough, the endless pickoffs (with or without the extr step lead) is atrocious and needs addressed.

They programmed it this way because people exploit the hell out of it in online gameplay. Unfortunately it transitions to offline gameplay. And the CPUs algorithm picks up on your aggressiveness, so I'm gonna go ahead and assume you are VERY aggressive on the base paths.
-
I am very aggressive on the bases. I’m an offline only player because the internet services where I live are horrendous. I personally play this game the same way I coach it in real life, small ball. Hit & runs, suicide squeezes, steals, sac bunts, hit behind runners, etc. I know that would be frowned upon in online play, but I don’t play online so it’s not hurting anyone.
I can imagine people do exploit it in online play. And I have no issue with say cover athlete Miggy getting picked off if he takes an extra step. But for example, AS Lofton, shouldn’t get picked off 2nd base (even with 1 extra step) 40% of the time. And shouldn’t get picked off 2nd base 20% without an extra step.
I’m not an online player, so I’m not quite sure the exact ways it gets exploited online, but you should get penalized for doing dumb things with bad base runners. But Henderson, Lofton, Rollins, etc, shouldn’t be handicapped so significantly in my opinion.
Also, please don’t take this as me arguing or bitching at you, just discussion, and admittedly, frustrated, because I’m not exploiting the game offline, just playing “old school” baseball

I hear ya, I'm not judging the way anyone wants to play this game. Small ball is baseball too. I merely tried to explain why the game is the way it is.

By any chance are you holding R2 to check the pitcher's repertoire or placement if his previous pitches thrown?
I've noticed that if I hold R2 during a CPU game to check those things the pitcher throws over 99.9% of time.
Very rarely will I see them throw over other times.

The only time it’s overboard, is during moments, when you can’t control the runners anyway.

No, I don’t. I used to do the guess pitch, but since you can’t use that feature in mini seasons, I’ve gotten out of the habit (and actually seen an uptick on my hitting). I wouldn’t even care about the pickoff attempts, if the dive back animation wasn’t a belly flop. I have no problem with a bad or average base runner getting occasionally picked off. But top flight base runners shouldn’t get picked off against the CPU at the rate they do, with or without one extra step (if you take more than one, by all means it should be frequent)
-
They reduced the time where the pickoff throw is caught and a tag slapped for sure.
I've been picked many times at 2nd because of a perfect pickoff almost every time. It's unrealistic. Not every pitcher is Andy Pettitte, although his success was mostly on runners on first.
It is true they won't let a guy with even 10 speed take a step off sometimes. -
I can't pick any one off online, I've got guys taking 2 step leads off of 1st and still can't get them.
-
I agree. Same with pitchouts. Then the commentary talks about how rare it is… not in this game. Expect at least 2 per game even if the runner has 65 speed and not taking a lead.
