Fielding question

Does the defense of a first basemen matter when he tries to catch a throw to first? I was just in a BR game and I have Prime Ray Durham at 2nd with 82 fielding and Rookie Vlad Jr at 1st with 52 fielding (minus the secondary penalty). I have button accuracy on, or whatever it's called where you get the throwing meter. I got it right on the money with the meter, but it popped in and out of Vlad's glove. That's the first time I've seen something like that happen.

He doesn't have 1B as a secondary position so yes he will drop balls. Up until 2 or 3 years ago you could put anyone at 1B and they would do just fine. You could literally have Mike trout at 1B and he would be good. Now if he doesn't have 1B as a primary or secondary position he will drop lots of routine balls thrown to him.

That's weird, I could have sworn it said 1B secondary in game, but you're right. I just checked the card on the market. I'll have to check next time I'm on and I guess I'll have to rearrange my infield.
