Is RTTS still online dependent this year?

I didn't get early access this year, but I'm seeing tons of people in the general discussion talking about constant server issues. For anyone currently playing, do we have to be connected to the online network to progress our players and manage the ballplayer, or did they take that part offline?
In other words is this going to be unplayable again for the first month?

Still need online to progress missions just like last year.
