Are you still living in NL, and if so, what area? I lived in Tilburg for 5 years, and then a few years ago moved back to Dortmund, Germany. I loved that you could find baseball fans in the Netherlands (unlike in Germany) and I played in an adult league one year in Eindhoven while I was there.

Either way this thread has grown very toxic, which was unnecessary in the first place. I noted that the flag used in the first picture was incorrect, which it was factually. There's no debate that represents the French flag. OP explained, edited it afterwards and now it's correct. Case closed. If you wanna blame me for pointing out this error and reacting sensitive to the matter, keep in mind that history can be sensitive and that things like these matter to those who have knowledge of it. Especially Americans would understand I assumed, since the flag is so holy to almost every American I've ever met. And I don't blame them, it represents a a lot of history and battles and pride. You wouldn't want your flag to be misused and neither do we.
The part where it got personal is where I got lectured about all this by some English Canadian. Let that sink in for a minute lol.

Yes sir, I lived in Tilburg as well for 6 years when I attended University. I still live in the area, but I'll be moving to the US once I get my Covid shots to live with my fiancee. I spend a lot of time in Eindhoven as well, great city. Awesome to meet someone who is familiar with the area!

Forgive me, I had no intention of upsetting you. I assumed we were having a healthy debate about the topic of flags, and for some reason you have taken this as a personal attack.

I think that's pretty self explaining and everyone would feel the same in my position, despite his fiancee's parents being Dutch.I am serious about being 1/4 Dutch but I am being sarcastic about blaming my behavior on my genetics. From what I gather Dutch are direct and straightforward in conversations. Typically the goal is to be helpful not hurtful. Other cultures may interpret that directness negatively and can be put off. Typically the comments you make fall into this stereotype and if readers will brush aside their emotions for one second they will realize most of the information and suggestions you make are helpful.

I wouldn't say we knocked heads. We were debating. You took it personally/got personal, so I simply stepped away as that wasn't my desired outcome. I believe that's where you wanted things to go anyways based off of your replies.
As far as I'm concerned the conversation is over and that's where everything will remain.

Unfortunately my grandfather who was the son of Dutch immigrants passed years ago when I was 9. My mother never knew her grandparents and didn't have really any connections to her ancestors. So unfortunately we don't have any connections to the Netherlands.

Unfortunately my grandfather who was the son of Dutch immigrants passed years ago when I was 9. My mother never knew her grandparents and didn't have really any connections to her ancestors. So unfortunately we don't have any connections to the Netherlands.
Sorry to hear that. Ever visited or thought about visiting? We don't have breathtaking scenery, but our cities are well worth it.
Europe is on my bucket list and Amsterdam is one of the cities I would love to visit. I will probably have to wait till the kids are out of college (my youngest is a 10 yr old) so it might be a while. I read you were trying to move to the US. Where abouts are you looking to move to?

Wow who would have thought arguing over the Dutch flag would have given me some insight as to why I argue so much and always think I am right. I’m 1/4 Dutch on my Mother’s side but do not have any knowledge of that part of my family tree. Other than making peach cobbler in a Dutch oven (I’m not even sure if that’s even a “Dutch thing”) I didn’t think I had type of culture from that part of my family. Now that I am enlightened that Dutch are known for “always being right” and for making a big stink out of everything. . Either way I just wanted to point out to @EvylShaun that I do not appreciate being lectured about my own heritage and culture. I think that's pretty self explaining and everyone would feel the same in my position, despite his fiancee's parents being Dutch.I am serious about being 1/4 Dutch but I am being sarcastic about blaming my behavior on my genetics. From what I gather Dutch are direct and straightforward in conversations. Typically the goal is to be helpful not hurtful. Other cultures may interpret that directness negatively and can be put off. Typically the comments you make fall into this stereotype and if readers will brush aside their emotions for one second they will realize most of the information and suggestions you make are helpful.
Spot on, we are also often perceived arrogant which is also a result of the directness. We speak out whenever we don't like something, but we also speak out when we do like something. We're just outspoken in general, but me personally I am hardly ever out to intentionally insult anyone. If that's my intention, you'll know for sure lol. Theres hardly anyone on this forum that I strongly dislike, 1 or 2 guys maybe, but that's it. I don't really have any beef with @EvylShaun either, I've seen him around here for a while and never had issues with him. Just because we knocked heads over this also doesn't mean we will continue to do so, or at least I won't.
Anyway, does the Dutch relative in your family still have contact with home base?

Amsterdam is a sight that's for sure. Lots of things to see and experience lol. My fiancee lives in San Antonio, Texas so that's where I'm headed first. We've been discussing moving to San Diego down the line, we've spent a fair amount of time there and both love it. But first things first and I like Texas as well.
