Played two event games, now when I try to play anything at all on DD it gives a message “you will not be able to use this feature until you join PS Plus”. What is this about??

Same. I had just finished an event game and it won't let me back in to do another one.

Had it happen to me too...I know for a fact my PS Plus is good til Feb
