I've never played BR before. is it more intense than events? I'm finding events more casual.

Its extremely unlikely there will be a big drop.

Calendar only says spotlight, no other program.

From what I could tell people were asking for MORE 3ish-inning game modes. Events were nice for trying out players, online grinding, and getting a quick game in when you didn't have enough time for nine innings. I guess they want people to play BR.
